We talked about how our school has continued to grow, now being 3 form entry throughout, as well as the amazing sports results, our School of Sanctuary Award and the Basic Skills Award.</p> <p>&nbsp;</p> <p>On top of this, we said a very heavy-hearted goodbye to our year 6&#39;s who are making the leap up to high school. They have blown us away with their great&nbsp;attitude and work ethic this year, as well as being fantastic role models for the rest of the school. Their hard work throughout SATs, has been rewarded with some of the best results in Leeds, not to mention being&nbsp;well above the national average.</p> <p>&nbsp;</p> <p>As a school, we have many people to thank for our success this year, pupils, staff,&nbsp;governors&nbsp;and parents. We will always be thankful for what we have and for the love of God, who guides us down the paths we take. He spoke to us about belief and how if we believe in something so much it becomes real.</p> <p>As christians, we believe in God. We believe so strongly that he is a real thing in our lives. God can guide us and teach us how to be better people.</p> <p>We shared prayers and talked about how we can use belief to help us succeed.</p>, 17 Jul 2017 17:11:15 GMTSchool of Sanctuary Assembly - Well Done St Bart's!<p>You may remember at the start of the 2016/2017 academic year we set ourselves the challenge of becoming a School of Sanctuary. After a year of hard work by the whole school, we were visited by Melanie Hadida today from City of Sanctuary. While she was here, School Council showed her all the work we have done over the past year to make our school a more welcoming and safe place for refugees. We know our school is an amazing place for anyone to come to, but we have worked extra hard this year!</p> <p>Melanie was really impressed with our school and the evidence we presented her with. She said she has never had such a solid application and was hugely impressed with our portfolio of work and the environment of our school. In fact, she was so impressed she has asked us to become a mentor school, to help out other school who want to be a safe and welcoming place, just like ours.</p> <p>Mrs Gavin accepted the award and thanked Mrs Brown, Miss Ingleson and all the children for their hard work.</p> <p>Our award will take pride of place in our school entrance hall for everyone to see when they visit us. Both the boys and the girls team made the school extremely proud, winning every race and taking 1<sup>st</sup> place out of all the Armley Schools.</p> <p>The team will compete again on December 7<sup>th</sup> in the West Leeds Competition. It will help us provide new kits for our growing number of teams.</p>, 17 Jul 2017 17:06:02 GMTThe Snap Election!<p>Year 6 took the lead (in collaboration with Mrs Dixon) and informed all children in Key Stage 2 about the snap election. They did this through an assembly which included:</p> <ul> <li>Why a snap election was taking place</li> <li>How people vote</li> <li>Who people could vote for</li> <li>The manifestos for the main parties involved</li> </ul> <p>This was then followed by a question and answer session.</p> <p>After the assembly children had two days to cast their vote on ballot papers and post them into a secure ballot box.</p> <p>On Thursday 8th June, in line with the real election, votes were counted by School Council members. Our Key Stage 2 votes were announced in assembly at the end of the school day:&nbsp; Key Stage 2 voted LABOUR!!! With a shocking 251 votes to 58!</p> <p>When questioned about the process, most children could discuss how we are a democratic society and what this involved. Most children could also give pros and cons of the Labour and Conservative manifestos.</p> <p>{gallery:The Snap Election!}</p>, 17 Jul 2017 17:05:27 GMTBasic Skills Award<p>The school is pleased to announce that it has been awarded the Basic Skills Quality Mark for its provision in literacy and numeracy.</p>, 17 Jul 2017 17:02:55 GMTWest Yorkshire Playhouse performance of Lifeboat<p>Children from Year 5 (in preparation for learning about World War 2 in Year 6) enjoyed watching West Yorkshire Playhouse&#39;s performance of Lifeboat at St Bartholomew&#39;s Church Hall, Armley.</p> <p>The play focused on the lives of two 15-year-old girls in 1940 who spent 19 terrifying hours in the water on an upturned Lifeboat. &nbsp;</p> <p>The organiser of the event commented on the excellent behaviour of the children and was impressed by how attentive they were.&nbsp;</p> <p>{gallery:West Yorkshire Playhouse performance of Lifeboat}</p>, 17 Jul 2017 17:02:20 GMTFather Michael School Assembly<p>Father Michael came in to speak to us today in our whole school assembly. He shared with us the story of Harry Potter and his close friendship with Ron and Hermione.</p> <p>We know that these three are very close friends and take on many challenges together. Father Michael asked us to think about how we approach challenges, making sure we keep trying and never give up. He also told us that we must remember to keep our friends close to us and when we have difficulties to always consider other peoples feelings and thoughts.</p> <p>We are so lucky to have an amazing school family at St Bart&#39;s. We have helped each other, and will continue to help each other, through many challenging times.</p> <p>It is important we remember, we must believe in God so he can guide us to do the right thing.</p>, 17 Jul 2017 16:59:25 GMTLet's Hear It For The Boys!<p>The team played two rounds in February and March securing a place in the city final in May for the first time.</p> <p>Unfortunately they did not get placed this year but we are now ready for next year&rsquo;s competition.</p> <p>{gallery:Let&#39;s Hear It For The Boys!}</p>, 14 Jul 2017 17:15:39 GMTSATs Week!<p>Children in Year 6 spent Friday12th of May celebrating the end of SATs Week with party food and DVDs!</p> <p>The children completed tests Monday-Thursday in English (Reading, Spelling, Grammar and Punctuation) and Maths (Arithmetic and Reasoning).&nbsp; Children were encouraged to attend breakfast club (free of charge) from 7:30 onwards to help settle nerves and to be with friends.&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;</p> <p>Mrs Gavin OBE, Head Teacher, was very impressed with how the children coped with the tests, &ldquo;The children should be very proud of themselves.&nbsp; They came to school with smiles on their faces, tried extremely hard and never gave up!&nbsp; Friday was a reward for all their efforts!&rdquo;</p> <p>{gallery:SATs Week!}</p>, 17 Jul 2017 16:58:53 GMTSchool Council Minutes - May 2017<p>Today we started to look at recycling as this will be our next project. Father Michael explained all about the importance of helping people.</p> <p>{gallery:Father Michael&#39;s Latest Assembly}</p>, 17 Jul 2017 16:56:13 GMTSchool of Sanctuary - St Bart's Prayer Club reaches Jordan!<p>You may recall recently St Bart&#39;s Prayer Club was asked by Nola Ellen to write prayers for children who were refugees and have now sought refuge in Jordan.</p> <p>After sending our prayers with Nola all the way to Jordan, the children have received them and are absolutely over whelmed with how beautiful and thoughtful they are. Nola spoke to the children about the prayers and how there was still people thinking about them. The teachers in the Jordanian school also loved them and have displayed them around their classroom so everyone can see them.</p> <p>The children in Jordan have sent letters back to prayer club, they can&#39;t wait to open them!</p> <p>Well done St Bart&#39;s Prayer Club, what a fantastic way to spread happiness and love to children just like you all over the world. You&#39;ve made your teachers really proud.</p> <p>{gallery:School of Sanctuary - St Bart&#39;s Prayer Club reaches Jordan!}</p>, 17 Jul 2017 16:54:33 GMTEaster at St Bartholomews Church<p>Today, we celebrated Easter at St Bartholomew&#39;s church with our whole school family.</p> <p>We listened to Nursery, Reception, year 1, year 2 and year 3 sing us some amazing songs all about Easter and Jesus&#39; sacrifice for us.</p> <p>Year 4 and 5 did a great job re-telling the Easter story, sharing with everyone what happened to Jesus.</p> <p>Father Michael spoke to us about Jesus&#39; sacrifice for us and how he wanted to help everyone, saying if everyone who he helps, helps someone else, then the world will be a better place.</p> <p>Mrs Gavin OBE spoke to us about Easter and Spring time. We are very happy with the presentation we have created! We have been asked to give each class a talk about School of Sanctuary. We spent the meeting discussing between ourselves and using ipads to get a better understand about what it is.</p> <h4>Minutes for 13/03/17</h4> <p>The final debate was held this week. We debated &lsquo;Do schools need school holidays?&rsquo; Children had strong views on this and all felt we needed school holidays!</p> <h4>Minutes for 06/03/17</h4> <p>Today we thought about school uniform. After the debate we concluded that children should wear school uniform because it looks smart and our children are proud to show they attend St Bart&rsquo;s.</p>, 14 Jul 2017 15:28:29 GMTSchool of Sanctuary - Prayers for Jordan<p>Over the past 2 weeks, children from year 2 upwards have been writing prayers for the refugees that currently live in Jordan. We thought about the most important things that we have that make us happy and keep us safe. We used these to write our prayers.</p> <p>The children did these totally independently and the results are amazing. Children have really thought hard and show such great compassion and empathy with people who are not as lucky as we are.</p> <p>At St Bart&#39;s, we are thankful to God for all he has done and continues to do for us. He told us he had just been on his holidays and he had taken some books to read. He chose Revolting Rhymes and Goodnight Mr Tom.</p> <p>We talked about how these books were fiction, they were made up so they are not the truth.</p> <p>Father Michael told us about being truthful and how we should always be truthful and true to ourselves.</p> <p>Jesus said &quot; I am the truth&quot;. He didn&#39;t just say it, he lived it and did what was right. Father Michael spoke to us about the three kings and why they took the presents they did to Jesus after his birth.</p> <p>They took Gold, as a sign of wealth, and hat one day Jesus would be King.</p> <p>They took Frankincense to show that he was very special, and that he would grow up to be a Priest, whose prayers touched everyone.</p> <p>Finally, they took Myrrh, this represented the most amazing gift he would give for us&mdash;his life on the cross.</p> <p>We shared a prayer about being thankful for everything we have, even if it is something we do not want or need.</p> <p>Mrs Gavin OBE, then spoke to us about being helpful and always trying our best. Year 2 did a great job of acting out the Christmas story.</p> <p>We have been learning about the true meaning of Christmas through our assemblies, Father Michael told us about how it is important to remember that Christmas day is Jesus&#39; birthday.</p> <p>Mrs Gavin OBE, spoke about being proud of ourselves and each other for the hard work we have done over the Autumn term.</p> <p>{gallery:Christmas Church Service - December 14th}</p>, 17 Jul 2017 16:18:03 GMTChristmas Play - Goldilocks and the Three Bears<p><strong>Goldilocks is Innocent!</strong></p> <p>Year 4 and 5 have been busy rehearsing and performing their Christmas play - Goldilocks and the Three Bears. The play this year was a twist on the normal fairy tale, in which Goldilocks was accused of being a thief by the Three Bears. Children were split into the defence and prosecution to act her trail.</p> <p>Luckily for Goldilocks, she was found to be innocent!</p> <p>All the staff and children worked so hard and it showed. All three performances were huge successes with parents, siblings and families being very impressed at the acting and singing they saw. Things are so close to being ready! The meeting mainly consists of tying ribbon to decorations and making all the final touches.</p> <p>We sat and discussed how we would set out the stand and how we would organise our stall. We had our annual Christmas Fayre day.</p> <p>Children and their families, friends of school and the local community were invited to come and spread some Christmas cheer with us. We had lots of stalls and games and even Santa in his Grotto!</p> <p>Staff and students worked together to make the day a resounding success. The children have been training really hard leading up to the event attending extra lunch time clubs. Both the boys and the girls team made the school extremely proud, winning every race and taking 1st place out of all the Armley Schools. The team will compete again on December 7th in the West Leeds Competition. He said that when he looks around, he sees a Hall full of Saints. We talked about what a Saint is. There are many famous Saints like Saint Bartholomew and Jesus&#39;s mother, Mary. Father Michael told us it is important for us to remember what God tells us through the Bible and his actions. His stories show us how we should conduct ourselves in our lives. After sharing a prayer, Mrs Gavin OBE praised the work of one of our LSA&#39;s in school, Mrs Rooks. She has been working hard with the sports teams we have at competitions. This was the first time some children had attended church and it was a great service! Each year performed songs and poetry about being thankful for everything we have. Jesus says no matter what we look like or where we are from, Jesus loves us all equally.</p>, 17 Jul 2017 15:43:17 GMTMulticultural Day and Evening<p>This week, Years 4, 5 and 6 took part in an African dance workshop. They learned about the country of Mali and were able to rehearse and perform a celebratory dance for African ceremonies. We practiced our coordination in time with the beat of the music and had lots of fun performing it at the end.</p> <p>In the afternoon, the whole school was treated to a sneak preview performance of the St Bart&rsquo;s band, which gave us a taster as to the songs we heard performed on the evening.</p> <p>At 4:30, the doors opened and hundreds of children and their families and friends came to enjoy our multicultural celebrations. Many worldwide foods could be enjoyed on the night, including foods and drinks from Italy, India, America, Hungary, Mexico and the Caribbean. Children also enjoyed playing games, getting Henna tattoos, getting their face painted, and buying some of their favourite books. They joined with choirs from 6 other schools to sing a multitude of songs, as well as seeing a choir from a local secondary school perform and hearing the fantastic Leeds Trinity choir singing in four part harmony.</p> <p>The trip was such a success, plans are already in place for the choir to attend this fantastic celebration of music again in the summer.</p> <p>The children recorded a song at the concert, written especially for the celebration. The song was put onto a CD and sold to raise funds for charity. Kevin and Adam told us all about the exciting new project we are part of this year and all about the amount of food that currently gets thrown in the bin every day. School council enjoyed a workshop in which they learnt a little more about the project and how to spread the word about wasted food. We are very excited to start fuel for school this week and will be receiving deliveries on a Tuesday and Thursday. Food will be available to take on a pay as you feel basis on these days from 2.45.</p> <p>{gallery:Fuel For School}</p>, 17 Jul 2017 15:03:43 GMTSt Bart's Cup 2016<p>Every year, the school organises the St Bart&rsquo;s U11 Girls&rsquo; Football Cup, which is open to all schools in Leeds to enter.</p> <p>Year 6 pupils help to organise the event and provide support on the day by helping to transfer results from the pitches to the official results table.</p> <p>This year 53 teams took part and the standard of football was very high.&nbsp; Holy Family beat Alwoodley in the final: 2-1 after extra time.</p> <p>St Bart&rsquo;s entered two teams. Team A reached the last 16 and Team B finished third in their group. We introduced ourselves to each other and explained what we wanted to bring to our roles. We then discussed what we will be trying to do over the Autumn term. This included a review of the ways in which food is served at dinner times and discussing ways to keep safe at school.</p>, 14 Jul 2017 16:28:22 GMTTag Rugby Tournament<p>St Bart&rsquo;s Year 6 tag rugby team displayed their great skill and sportsmanship at the tournament at Stanningley Rugby Club last week. The team worked excellently together in both defending and attacking, which resulted in them winning all their group matches, the quarter final and the semi final. We had made it to the final against Holy Family, what a fantastic achievement! Throughout the final the team continued to play brilliantly. Both teams worked incredibly hard, resulting with the game ending in a draw. It was down to the golden try and unfortunately Holy Family managed to score the first try.
